Hello and good afternoon. New to the forum and coal. I dove head first into the coal burning scene , building a hearth this weekend. Looking at burning rice and nut coal. I've been doing quite a bit of research, some great take aways from this forum. Now on to the questions.
- MPD ... should I put one inline with the baro ? Stove salesman would not sell me one.
-Are all the breakers up north created equal ? Is the coal the same quality, source but out put etc. ?
I've spoken with :
Lehigh,Blashak and a few others on pricing.
-Will the yards fill my 3500 to the top of the bed ?
-Bagged coal. Store bought. Who to stay away from who's to buy.
Thank you in advance
John

Welcome to the forum.
I do not have an mpd on mine,i don't believe in using one for a coal stove, however,i will not argue with those who have their mind set on an mpd on their stove. An mpd on someone else's stove will not affect me,so why should I worry about it.?? If using an mpd & baro, always install the mpd between the stove & the baro.
The 2 brands of coal you mentioned are both good. I bought my coal from Gale Mining Company in Ginther,Pa. have burnt about 18 ton or so,am very happy with the price, the way it burns,it is clean coal & I like dealing with the forum member who owns the company . He is fifthg, the 5th generation owner of this family run company.
You say you are looking at both rice & nut, what will you be burning the 2 different sizes in ?

You can go to any breaker and they will fill your truck as full as you want it. Just remember if it;s overloaded and you get caught...it/s on you.

From my personal experience with nut,it already has plenty of pea in it. Peanut would be a more fitting name for it.If you buy pea,it will likely have some buck in it which will fall thru the grates in your stove. I would strongly recommend nut for your stove.Journeymansun wrote:Sorry , Pea and Nut. Don't know why the two different sizes. I wanna see what works better for me.

Welcome to the forum.
I personally have only ever used MPD's. Some on here use a baro and MPD if they have a very strong drafting chimney. The MPD will slow the draft enough for Baro to work properly. Dunno why he wouldn't sell you one, they were in existence long before a baro was even dreamt of.

I'm not trying to ignite the great damper debate.
I will be adding one between my stove and baro.
Basically if I get nut right off the belt of the breaker. It will be mixed with smaller pieces. The smaller pieces won't be tiny pieces I hope.

Besides the mpd possibly blocking enough gases that could leak back into the living area, there is the convenience factor.
A baro will automatically adjust to the changing draft of the chimney which is dictated by the OAT ,heat in the chimney & the wind. The baro can be set for when the draft is lowest & when the wind comes along & the chimney is drafting hard enough to suck the coal off the grates,.... relief is right there... the baro opens & all is well with the air flow thru the grates again. I am not interested in running into my house to adjust an mpd every time the wind changes here on my hill. The baro makes the draft more consistent.. reminds me of how coal burns so consistently .

Don't worry about it, someone does it every year.Journeymansun wrote:I'm not trying to ignite the great damper debate.
Are you actually going to burn coal in Philly, or in the burbs?

I'm curious how Journeymansun knew about 'The Great Damper Debate'. New to coal, new to the forum?StokerDon wrote:Don't worry about it, someone does it every year.Journeymansun wrote:I'm not trying to ignite the great damper debate.

Going to burn coal in Conshohocken and Ocean City once I get it figured out. The electric furnace is beating me to death.

I was just asking because getting rid of the ash may turn out to be a problem in both of those places.Journeymansun wrote:Going to burn coal in Conshohocken and Ocean City once I get it figured out. The electric furnace is beating me to death.

Removal and disposal shouldn't be a bid deal there are a few places that I've called that will take the coal ash as " structural fill ". To bad there's not a local recycling center just begging for my "CCR's".
It has been used as a soil admendmdnt for ever , there are even certified organic fertilizers that have use it as an ingredient. I would think it may help my blueberrys thrive save me from using holly tone to keep the ph down. -What do the old timers do with it ? I've hit pockets of coal ash planting trees and shrubs.
