TSC Coal 2016/2017

Like Lee mentioned, some bags are worse than others. And I too have been using it as a blanket to cover the hot bed, but this morning, the blanket was "heavier" than normal, and has been really choking the coal bed out. I think it was 10lbs of fines, but I couldn't confirm, cause it got buried in the pour. Next time, I'll be more careful on how I load TSC Reading nut coal to the stove.
It's "almost" back to normal since the addition of the Lehigh stove, but my dampers are still a little more open than normal. I'm thinking after tomorrows dedicated shakedown, I'll be ridding it of the tumors.

I have been burning some of the " no name " TSC coal. It's not pretty, wood chips and some fines but lights quick and burns good. I'm looking to get some Lehigh to try. So far I have burned mostly Kimmels and some Santa coal.

Bought 5 bags labeled Premium coal.

Just lit today. Very clean, no fines, not wet.

Slow to ignite with almost no volatiles. Seems like excellent coal, but needs a few more days to evaluate.

Is it nut or pea, FB? Keep an eye out for consistency. I have a pallet, and have opened about 10-12 bags or so, and they're all over the place. Have had a few decent bags, but more of it's been real "crap".

Nut coal used in the Vigilant. Sizing good.

First shake down this morning after 17 hours. Still surprised at the low volatiles; very little blue flame. Added about 16 pounds. Ash amount typical. White ash. Stove top 400- 450.

Picked up a ton of Miners Choice from TSC Stony Point NY. Tbey just received a 10 ton delivery this past Thursday. My pallet has shipping invoices. The source is Reading Anthracite.

OK Al. Let's see what they bagged for you. Mine is so inconsistent, it ranges from pea, to nut, to even some chunks almost the size of stove, in some bags, but some are almost tolerable. And the crap at the bottom of the bag looks like magic dust. ("cept it don't burn well). And of course they like to throw in some splintered pallet wood too. Good luck with yours.

Most wood in coal products comes from the heavy timbers that early miners put in as they moved onward digging tunnels in coal veins and that is what supported the ceilings in the original deep mines.

At our M&G when we toured Lehigh's strip mining pit last September those attending members were witness to exposure of these wood timbers and their busting up and splintering amoungst the exposed coal.

I'm not satisfied with the product. The coal looks like it was not washed , is very wet (bags actually freeze rigid in my garage), contains multiple sizes (almost like item 4), and does not burn well. It is however over 40 cents a bag cheaper than my local supplier. Which is why I purchased it. Earlier in the season I ended up with some leftover Kimmels from TSC that was clean large pieces of coal that burned hot and generated little ash.

Al, yours sounds about how mine was. I added pics somewhere here of it. I attacked all the bags poking several holes in all of them to help the drying, but mine was bought months ago and Im not sure how much good that will do now. Some I poured into a bin. Bagged coal is almost always wet to some degree when its bought. If bought earlier in the year its fine by fall.

Mine has been burning good but I am tiring of the fines as it creates more dust and actually more nasty stink when I load as the dust ignites when its thrown in before I can close the door. Some here sift it but Im too lazy for that.

Warmin, this is the 1st year I've had to "sift" also, because of fines. The Kimmels pea, and Blaschak from previous years, didn't require it.

Sure is difficult to find these 'homongenized coal' products!

Purchased 8 bags in Rutland, VT a few days ago and was surprised to find very large...almost stove size nuggets. It was wet which doesn't bother me. Quite the contrast from the last bag I bought at the same store several months ago, which was all pea and fines. Burns good.

TSC is like a box of chocolate....
