fifthg, while loading my boiler hopper tonite,i was once again marveling at how clean your coal is & the uniform size. Then I thought about other members who find rocks or stones in their coal. That made me curious as to how your company gets the stones out & if you can have your coal 100% free of stones??

russocw75..I don't know if I'm understanding it right that you said Harmony in Mt Carmel is shut down. I go past there every day and they are OPEN every day and 7-12 on Sat. They also have a big banner on their fence saying bagged coal $5.99. Sorry if i'm confused about the statement.

Isayer, they have about 4 front end loaders and a dozer working the mountain right behind their building. They are working right across the road from where Blaschak is mining.

The UAE Harmony mine was one of the few remaining underground mines. Not a surface mine.

Since we are burning Gale coal in our EFM,i have noticed 1 thing missing.......... the strong sulfur smell that we have been disgusted with since going from wood to coal. When we start craving that sulfur smell,we have to get down wind of our house chimney which is still exhausting the smell from the Reading nut burning in our Crane 404. The boiler exhaust has had a strong to us sulfur smell when we started with Superior, then to Blashack & Reading. If there is any sulfur smell from the Gale coal, we have not noticed it & that makes us :D

I have been watching the ash quantity for pounds of coal burnt, tonite I pulled the ash tub with about 1 quart of empty space left,i added 180# of coal to the hopper. I am very happy with the ash/coal burnt ratio with this Gale coal. As I mentioned in a previous post,we are very happy with the lack of surfer smell that we have disliked from the first coal fire here. We have missed the wood smoke smell, the sulfur smell was like an insult to our smell sensors. We still miss the wood smoke smell, but unless we get a whiff of the exhaust from our hand fed stove burning Reading ,we don't smell sulfur . :D

Ash pics as promised. Our pile will likely change shape tomorrow as it is very likely we will be using ashes for cinders on the drive, walks & parking areas following today's heavy snow squall deposit of 1/2-3/4 " .

Is that all Gale coal ashes? Looks like my Reading coal ashes.

I recently installed my Dwyer manometer and adjusted my draft with the baro down a bit and will be watching the new ashes, trying to get burning efficiency where I can.

I plan to be getting larger amounts of coal shortly (working on a larger coal bin) and want to be sure I'm getting the best I can for the best price I can ;)

Thanks for posting the pics.

The Gale coal ashes are very similar to the Reading coal ashes,Gale may be just a bit darker. No stink out of the exhaust stack with the Gale. :D That is huge for us, we were addicted to the smell of wood smoke, sulfur is not a good substitute.

My exhaust exits almost 40' in the air, I never smell it! Used to smell the bit handfed, though- especially with the first JUNK I was burning- until some of the good folks here turned me onto better coal.

I am a fan of "better coal" :)
