So I got a coal grinder, well two. So if I feed it with nut coal it looks like I will get something that will be in the rice-buckwheat-pea range that my axeman devours. Anyone grind their own or play with one of these machines before?

Where on earth did you find that? That is not an everyday find.

When I was a kid my dad had a hammer with a handle falling off and some Taiwanese screwdrivers his father in law gave him out of pitty from a 5 and dime. I may be overcompensating in the tool department just a bit.

What you have is a small rotary hammermill primary crusher.
You would have much better results with a small roll crusher. I would give it a try although I'm not sure you would have any sizing adjustment other than changing all of the hammers.

Looks like she'll work REAL well W. Keep us posted.
It'll do the job if you have sizing screenswnycoalier wrote:So I got a coal grinder, well two. So if I feed it with nut coal it looks like I will get something that will be in the rice-buckwheat-pea range that my axeman devours. Anyone grind their own or play with one of these machines before?

Are you sure your AA can happily burn rice coal? I wouldn't want to try it in my similar AHS.

Larry, Wait until you see your next load of Blaschack Pea...it might be similar to the Blaschack Pea I was burning.
Which sounds exactly what WNYCoalier described..."rice-buckwheat-pea range" and mine was loaded with even fines and dust in addition.
I would guess if I screened for pea size the pea may of been about 50% by volume and probably much less % by weight.
It did burn well for me, but I can tweak/adjust the blower/fan motor speed w/ the VFD I added to my AA.

I ran tons of straight blaschak rice through. Other than having to drain the water first before going in the sub zero feed bin the rice burned excellent. I if I didn't know better I'd say it burned better. It was more forgivig when the e bunker ran low to hold a sustaing fire and the ash was the least clumpy. I am curious if rice limits total BTU output( I never needed all 260kbtu) or if it would need to run more frequently durin glow demand months as a lack of natural airflow would limit convection drafting.

Sizes smaller than pea reduce the AAs output. Too small is trouble.

Grinding in stunning color. At the end I grabbed a piece of normal nut for comparison. More dust in the video than I noticed in real life. https://youtu.be/YCW9Em2Z2PI
