The family and I are discussing the option of buying a tractor load, I believe it comes in 18 skids, 2500 lbs per pallet, which is 22.5 ton, bagged coal. We are looking at roughly 5 ton per house hold and there's 3 of us so that's 15 ton a year roughly, I have heard of people around me getting it for roughly 240-250 a ton, I paid 300 a ton last year, so it would deff be worth it for us. I am wondering in everyone's opinion, who is the best/ easiest place to order a TT load of bagged coal from? we have a local guy we are going to talk too too see if he'll do a back haul, but if we have too well have too shop around for the trucking.

I can't attest to its quality (or for that matter its source), but Penn Keystone Coal Company, LLC offers bagged anthracite and appears to arrange for T/L deliveries.

There is a bagging company that bags the highly regarded Lehigh Anthracite and will contract a TT delivery for you. IIRC the 18 skid trailer has a built in crane to unload the skids as well.

Problem is I've forgotten the name of the bagging company.

I'm pretty sure someone on here will post up the name of the company.

I wish I had a place to stow 18 skids :)

Well I contacted penn keystone coal, they quoted me at 229/ton bagged and 65/ton to deliver it to my house. That's the price I buy it for here lol I was expecting it to be cheaper than 229/ton, I am still waiting on kimmels too reply and Lehigh too reply. I pretty sure I'm goin to be able to get the trucking taken care of for a descent price, I just hope the other places are a better price. Is the bagging that expensive?

I can't give you exact figures on the cost of bagging, but yes, generally bagging is expensive. I imagine they use machines to do it, but that is specialized equipment that loads, seals and stacks the bags on pallets that cost extra also. Then you have the storage space involved. If they stack like most places do, they only stack about 3 skids high. The loading is 1 to 1.2 tons at a time.

With the bulk, and an elevator, they can make enormous piles 50 feet high (or more), and use a front loader to load out tons at a time onto a dump trailer.

Bagging is more labor intensive, as opposed to bulk.

Are you all close enough to each other to make loose coal into a community bin doable?

Just tossing that out there.

This may be a case where you might actually do better working with a local hardware/feed store...
For a TT load, they don't have to touch, they might get a better rate/delivery fee even with their cut.
Again, just a thought...

According to Lehigh Anthracite's ad here on NEPA, they are charging $170 ton for all sizes.

This is a good thought! Maybe even throw in a discount for large quantity order.
