Need Coal? Post It Here! Archive 1
Hi-Just found and joined the Forum. Burning nut in a Godin and need to find a supplier for the Bridgeport area in SW CT. Also having more than a few problems with the first coal I bought: Blaschak from a distributor in Bristol, $280/ton bagged +$80/delivery-lots of rice which slipped through the grate and about 25% unburned and clinkers; and the stove-lots of air leaks-had to install a Fields damper which helped until I can tear apart and re-seal.

Transportation is the key, Fuel, Tolls, and a decent wage for the driver, what do you consider a fair price for delivery to be tacked on to the $130 a ton figure .Catalina7777 wrote:Hi Everyone! Hello:
Brand new to the idea of burning coal (as a supplement to wood), and would like to give it a try.
Spent the better part of the day looking for *any* coal supplier in or near SW Wisconsin (Mt. Horeb / Dodgeville area) without success.
Anyone know of a source for bulk or bagged coal (of any kind) in my neck of the woods?
Thanks for any leads.

Hi Peter B. You can get Blaschak bagged ($300/ton) in Rockford Il. Blaschak also has a dealer in Mineral Point WI (even closer for you, but don't know price). Both are also dealers for Harman Stoves. Hope this helps you out.

Al @ Household Fuel in New Britan, 860-224-2424. Jeddo coal @ $230 a ton loose, I don't know what he gets for delivery as I pick mine up. The first load I got this year was absolutely stunning (5400#) no trash or rock and the coal was the best I've ever used. The second load (4300#) was the same coal but I did get some rocks, it was nut.coalmark wrote:Looking for bulk delivery of nut coal to Northwest CT, about 5 -6 tons. Currently using bagged Reading, $260 ton pick-up.
Never had any luck with Reading, lots of crap (car parts, wire, metal and you name it) in it (the guy in Meriden).

I think 200 is fair a ton for an order of 4-5 tons. I know it takes me about 2 hours to go back home so all in all about a 5-6 day.coalstoves wrote:Transportation is the key, Fuel, Tolls, and a decent wage for the driver, what do you consider a fair price for delivery to be tacked on to the $130 a ton figure .Catalina7777 wrote:Hi Everyone! Hammer8:
Thanks very much for the tip on the Blaschak/Harman dealer in Mineral Point. Not a bad drive at all for me, and they confirmed they have bagged anthracite. I don't think I ever would have found them otherwise.
In fact, I'd pretty much given up hope finding a local source when I posted yesterday, but as soon as I can get out from under the last 8 inches of snow, I'll be making the trip.
Not sure yet what the exact price is per bag, but - for the moment - this is only an experiment, and a way to stretch my wood supply this season, so I'm glad to have *any* source.
When I can, I'll post results from my first burn(s) on the Hand Fired forum... in case anyone's interested.
Thanks again.

Catalina, What places have you found selling for 130- 140 a ton semi close to New York?
Coalstoves asked what people consider a fair price. Obviously the farther you get from coal country the economic advantages of using coal go down. When I started burning coal the price here in northeastern newyork was less than 150 a ton. hardwood was about 100 a cord green . Now five years later hardwood is about 125 green and I'm paying 240 a ton bulk which I shovel myself and it's junk Reading reading which doesnt burn half as good as bagged Blascak $ 7 a 40lb bag or Kimmels at $8 a 50lb bag. I don't know how yet but I'm going get alot of coal at least 10 tons at a better price than I'm paying now.

In a world of $3.40 a gal diesel fuel transportation becomes a big part of the cost . Then the driver has to make a living an upstate New York Delivery is going to be about an 8 hour day if the coal comes from Pittston area now bear in mind the driver will get up and head from his house to the breaker and more than likely have to wait his turn in line to scale the empty trk and proceed to the chutes and again wait his turn he will load and reweigh park the trk go in and pay then go out and tarp the trk its easy to tie up 45 min to an hour then drive about 150 miles to Rhinebeck during the trip the driver will average about 6 maybe 7 mpg and will lose time on every hill he encounters figure the trip to be about 3 hours up and 3 back remember this ain't your camry darting along at 70 mph . Hopefully when he gets to your location he will be able to untarp set the chute and pull the lever to dump 5 tons with out a lot of screwing around, on the way home he may want to stop and get a burger that will set him back about 8 bucks cause everything's expensive nowadays. Now with a realistic look lets do the math and lets not insult the driver too bad we'll figure him for $15 an hour .Salemcoal wrote:Catalina, What places have you found selling for 130- 140 a ton semi close to New York?

Like I said before the price of bagged is not outrageous for folks outside the region .
$2.50 a mile minimum to transport . $375 on top a the coal 1 stop / Additional stops $25 ea

The quote was from Lakawanna PA which is about 1.5 to 2 hour drive from New York Border going down I-81.Salemcoal wrote:Catalina, What places have you found selling for 130- 140 a ton semi close to New York?
As far as deliveries go I could do about 3 trips to border in a day if they are up I-81 but that's if I'm the road by 6:30A.M., the breaker isn't busy and I can pretty much count on not parking the truck until 7 or 8 P.M Locally I once delivered about 42 ton with 5 ton truck by myself in one day and the truck was parked by 5.
