Thanks for posting that Joey!

My supplier, Storey in Jackson ran out of nut and told me they wont get any till April or May.

I had to run to Ohio (64 miles one way!) to get some last weekend.

I called Lester Bros and got their prices. $7.25 per 40# of bagged. $290 for bulk per ton.

I am not set up for bulk coal and am not sure if its really worth the hassle. But then...bags are a bit of a hassle too, but, they are much easier to move and certainly cleaner. Just not fully sure they are worth an extra $70 per ton.

Thanks again for the heads-up!

Well....i went and bought some from this place yesterday.

Mixed review I guess.

The people there are very nice and friendly. The coal comes in small sacks containing 30# of coal. They quote the price as if its in 40# bags and adjust accordingly. I paid $77 (includes tax of course) for 14 bags.

The small bags are very easy to pick-up and move around.

However! All the bags contain A LOT of ice/water!! My cart in the basement that I empty the coal into now has over an inch of nasty black coal water in it. I don't see much difference in how it burns being so wet...other than it just sizzles awhile until it burns off the water.

Not sure whats worse....the coal dust from my other coal or the coal slurry from this. The other bags are even now thawing in my basement and making a mess.

They also have bulk Pancho.

The kid that helped me load up said they had originally thought most people would want to buy in bulk. Then when they started selling they found out that 90% of the people wanted it in bags. So they are not as prepared as they had thought they would be.

He said they will be much more organized next heating season.

I am not set up to buy in bulk. And by the time you also pay for delivery....the bags don't cost that much more.

Don't forget about the time, effort and fuel of hauling your own, unless you drive by it on your way home from work or something.. :)

Thanks for the update Joey! Can you tell me the price per ton and per bag? I bought quite a bit there last year and it was in smaller 30 pound bags....is that the case this year too?

Also...what is your delivery price? I am about 15 miles from you....

Thanks! Ken

Someone mentioned saving money by getting together to make a large purchase of bagged coal. I'm working on starting a coal stove company in Dundee, Michigan and am considering also carrying bagged coal for my customers but can't justify purchasing 22 tons of coal (a truck load) to start with. It's too much coal and too much money frankly. I'm wondering if it would work to gather coal buyers who want to save money together and combining needs to fill a truck load. I can get it to Dundee, where people could pick it up, for $275 to $325 per ton... depending on the cost of a space and equipment to offload and store the coal. With 50 x 40 lb bags, that works out to around $5 - $6.5 per bag.
If there's enough support here to suggest it could work, I'll start a topic in the appropriate section. This would be high quality coal from Reading Coal.

Let me know your level of interest. If this turns out to be a good idea, I'll start a new thread with more information and will probably make it an annual affair so we can all get good coal at a good price.in Michigan.
Long live coal and the coal industry... America's all natural energy source.

I would be interested in that if your prices are as you say. Its a long drive for me so if the price is higher it would not make sense.

I also see Lester Bros are not answering my request for pricing on here. Thats never a good sign....

I will go check out Storey since I drove past there a few days ago and noticed their yard was full of pallets of coal again.

I called Lester's yesterday and the girl said they didn't have this year's prices yet. She quoted me last years prices.

I am very confident of the pricing IF we go with Reading coal. I am looking at other possible suppliers to assure quality and best pricing. I will let you know what I find out over the next few days. How many tons might you want?

Revtim.....i got the same think when I called Lester's.

Since I had a semi-lousy experience with buying coal last year that turned out to be dirty as hell and did not burn real well....i would be a bit hesitant to order too much right away. I would start with a ton and see how it goes. If its good (and I assume it will be) I would then likely be in for 3-6 more tons.

But it does have to be bagged as I am not at all set up for bulk.

I called Storey to get their price today and someone was supposed to call me back but never did. They are usually high but maybe the competition from Lester's will bring them down a bit. Before Lester started selling it they had a virtual lock on the coal near me.

I am planning on driving to PA, perhaps first of the week to visit the coal stove manufacturers and see the coal producers first hand. Then, once I am assured of the quality and the price, I will be ready to see if I can get the truckload together. It's obviously going to take a few people but, at the savings I'm looking at, it should be worth the effort. At least that's the plan.

Coal pricing @ Lester Brothers
all bags are exactly 50 lbs

A pallet is 2500 lbs

the cost of a pallet is $400.00

the cost per bag is $8.20

Please note my bags are 50 lbs not 40 lbs
