I have been burning Rice coal from Lutz Coal Yard in Schwenksville, PA for the past 2 seasons. I have no complaints because I haven't burned anything else to compare. I am looking for a known good source so I can see how Lutz stacks up. I live near philly, but am not opposed to going up to Jim Thorpe area as I have a Mountain house there. Any suggestions? Thanks all---

Lutz's has balshak as does Pottstown Roller Mills. There is a place in Elverson Pa. that carries coal and I believe it's bagged only, and also call Ambler Coal in Ambler Pa.

EDIT:Ambler Coal no longer carries coal :wtf:

I have used Lutz's coal. I like it. It burns hotter with less ash than the other coal I bought for this winter. But maybe I haven't found the sweet spot for tuning my boiler for this other coal.

Bulk coal is available here but only bulk so I haven't used it:

Thanks for everybodys response and info. I think I am going to stick with Lutz or stop by Gale Mining Co‎ in Jim Thorpe. I I will report back on what I do and my finding.

Hi infotech and welcome, since you must be in the chester/mont. area. Theres a new coal supplier in Bechtelsville pa., "Liv'n Green Landscape Supply",1-610-369-0369. I called them, they deliver with a high lift truck and carry rice, pea, nut sizes. They bag their own coal, but when I asked what breaker they get their coal the person didn't know the source, and needed to ask the owner,I didn't wait to hear the answer.

Thanks Dennis.

Can anyone tell me how I would know for sure that I am getting the tons that I paid for if I buy from Lutz? My previous deal (he retired after 25 years), loaded at Blashack and gave me the weighmasters receipt so I was fairly confident that I was getting what I paid for.

I looked at my slip from Lutz's and it has the gross/tare/net weight with the weightmaster's licence# and signature, even the truck's licence. They were very promt and I was impressed with their new trucks and the expanding chute, didn't even back off driveway and chuted 18' with stove size coal

Got a coal delivery from Lutz today. I have been burning coal for 25+ years and this is some of the better coal that I have seen. Nice, shiny look. Great delivery.

I purchased rice coal from Walter Hendricks last year and a little this year. It seemed that last years coal from Hendricks burned better than did the little I got this year. I tried using M J Gaydos this year and the coal seems to burn hotter than did Hendricks. Mike from Gaydos said he gets coal from east Tamaqua and it's white ash (not sure what Hendricks is). So far this year I am happy but from the previous posts I will have to try Lutz next.
