So far this season, I’ve burned both their pea and now their nut. Just started the nut last night, but initial impressions are great. Lots of heat, and seems to catch quickly. First time ever burning their nut size, have been using their pea for years.

Far as the ash, from the ~2 ton of pea I’ve used since November, it’s about what it’s always been from Direnzo. Not the lowest ash coal I’ve ever burnt, but better than a lot of others. I’m very happy, drive ~1.5 hours from Williamsport area for it if that says anything :).

Hope this helps,

Joe

Hank,

To update, the nut that I bought from Direnzo last week is noticeably higher ash than their pea that I was burning. Pea had a whitish gray ash, the nut is more of a reddish (as the stuff you had a couple years ago).

Doesn't seem to be bad coal by any means, but I’m not as impressed with it as I usually am with their pea. This is my first time buying their nut, and to be honest, only reason I did was the fact that the pea froze solid on me on the way home last year. Figured the nut wouldn’t stick together as badly, and I was correct.

Hope this helps,

Joe

Thanks for report, js! The nut I had last year was reddish ash. If I'm remembering correctly, the coal from 2 years a go was whiter. Just depends where they and other breakers are sourcing and what's being blended, I guess. I've seen much worse stuff in bags.

No problem :)

I haven’t burned anything but their pea for several years, so can’t say if this is the HIGHEST ash I’ve had. But it is noticeably higher than the pea. Had it shut pretty well down last night, still had to shake quite a bit. Long as my arm doesn’t fall off, guess I’ll make it through ;).

The coal I bought from Direnzo coal the week of Christmas 2017 is very red ash! It has much more fines than past years and more ashes than in the past. It does burn well but is burning faster than the white ash I have gotten the past few years. I don't know if it is normal for the coal to change from year to year this much but I liked the white ash coal much better. And the amount of fine slivers and bb size coal is such a waste.

I got a load of stove from Direnzo's this year and I'm seeing a sizable increase in the ash (mostly white with red in the mix) as well, It burns very well but my pans are full after 24 HRS and Its very heavy.

They do not own or mine any coal, they are a buyer, processor and distributor.

They buy from small mine operations that have no breaker of their own. This keeps Direnzo's Coal bins full to be able to sell.

They may be picky and try to blend all the different sources of what coal they buy in order to keep SOME consistency in what coal they produce/sell.

I bought 2.25 tons of DiRenzo nut on the afternoon of 12-26-17. That was one of the nicer loads of coal that I’ve burned in my DS Machine Kozy King hand fired furnace. The ash was more white than red, seemed to be lower ash, and was very easy to control.
I purchased another 2.67 tons of nut from DiRenzo on Feb 3, and put it in my nearly empty bin on Feb 17. This coal seems to be sized slightly smaller, and it is much redder ash than the last load. I also noticed that the ash pan is filled every night, and heavy. This latest warm spell we had since switching to the new coal, I’ve had more trouble maintaining a low fire. I have my intake air completely closed and it is still pushing 80° in the house. I think this current load would work out better if the chimney didn’t draft as hard as it does.

Juat thought I would follow up.... I have now burned about half of this last load that I started on back in Feb. The ash content is ridiculous. This is the first coal I’ve burned where the ash pan is heaping full every day. Literally the ash is piled higher than the ash door opening, and then I have to shovel out the ash pan area so I can get the pan back in there. Hopefully someone from DiRenzo is on the forums and takes note.

Nice to see ya LD . I thought the same thing about their coal this year as well, The amount of ash is unbelievable plus its extremely heavy but at least it burns good :| .

I weighed my bag of ash this morning before I dumped It, this is from one week of burning 285 LBS of stove and it was 54 LBS :o so I'm guessing its around 18%.

I have a few hundred pounds of Direnzo left I picked up about 4-5 years ago and it's very low ash. I would really like to find something with lower ash.
