Glen burn mine is near Shamokin and isn't the same coal as what UAE sold. Uae mined out of the Harmony mine which was up on the hill above the scale house. The harmony mine had a few different veins of coal in it. The last two were lykens veins with the last I think being the lykens 2 vein. They were in that vein for about the last 4 years. From what I have been told from the mining engineer that helped UAE with their permits is that the coal being sold there now is not from the same source as before as the permits are not in place to mine the old site. Also the new coal is strip mined and they were going to use UAE's breaker to process the coal however UAE didn't have a cone seperator to my knowledge so if it is stripped coal it isn't going to be very good if it isn't floated through a menzies cone.

It looks like Harmony mine is open today. On the way to work this morning all the bins were full and the gate open. As always call first.

January 2013 I was running low and needed a load, only to find they were out of pea, they told me they can't process coal when it's really cold. I ASSUMED they used water, to clean ,float,or whatever, then the coal would freeze. But I don't understand the process, so what do I know :bag: :gee: :bang: Might someone enlighten us of the process.

Water is generally used in handling coal to keep the dust down.

Actual separation of coal from slate, bone and other impurities is done via a menzies cone, heavy media flotataion or special spiral seprators. Depending on the coal size, each type of process may be more or less effective.

Some places have all three process. Some only one or two. I am not sure based on what I have read here that UAE does any more than sort and wash the coal.

I found this youtube video showing two of the processes at the Sherman breaker.

I have been using this coal all week and have to agree. Not the same coal. Burns almost white ash. Not quite the white of Blashak but not close to the red of old Harmony . But I like the sizing of the nut better than Blashak. Not all mixed with Pea.

Cap, How do you rate the amount/volume of the ash compared to the old Harmony? Thanks Mike.

I can't tell at this point being its been warm. I've started three fires in the past week. And as you know, you will pile up with much more ash when you empty & re-light. Unlikely I can answer this question this season.

I just re-lit again, just for tonight cause it's better than the back up heat. :)

I called Harmony to ask about their new coal. They told me the new company will be called Glen Burn/Harmony Mine. The coal comes from 2 large open pit mines. The coal is currently cleaned by the heavy media process. Harmony breaker utilized the same process. Ash content varies from 8-10. Most of the coal comes from the Mammath Vein. They have rice, buckwheat, pea, and nut. They told me they will also be selling stove coal in the future.

Anyone have an update on what UAE is currently running ash content wise for rice coal? I was going to switch coal mines when they changed hands but think I might give the new guys a try. Will be picking up 5 tons of rice and don't want some super high ash content.

Thanks again,
Glenn

Thanks again,

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I talked to someone today that was very happy with a load of nut coal they got from Mallard. Let us know how it burns for you.

Does anyone know if the new mine has rice? If so what about the price?

Thanks

Yep they sure do. I will be posting a report next week. Appears to be a little bit more heat then UAE with just slightly more ash. It ois $170.00 a ton.

Thanks,
Glenn
