Coal From Mammoth Materials

I've been searching around for a coal supplier to go if indeed UAE does shut down.... I was over at Keystoker 2 weekends ago, checking out their warm air furnaces, and they mentioned they get their coal from Mammoth Materials, just off of rt 901, about 4 miles SE of 81. Their price is $150/ton, so I figured I would go check it out.

It was a little rough getting up their entrance road in the Prius, but I managed to slop through the mud, snow and slush. The folks running the place were friendly and personable, we spent about 20 minutes BS'ing about coal, then we loaded up a 1/2 ton of nut, 2 buckets of rice, paid, and were on our way.
Since we were in the area, I figured a trip to Vito's coal fired pizza was in order, after reading some of the other folks comments about the place. It's a little spendy, but worth it! Excellent service and food.
I've been burning the coal since Saturday, and I'm very pleased so far. Seems to have just a tad more ash than UAE, but nothing that's a problem. The coal consumption seems to be about the same. With the weather, I haven't been able to run a really hot fire. Hopefully we will get one more cold snap before the end of the winter, to see if the stuff will clinker or not. I'm sending the 2 buckets of rice to a buddy of mine with a Harman Super Mag, to see how it runs in that. I'll report back on it later.

LD, Thanks for bridging the subject that many of us are rolling around in our mines.......I mean minds. Tell me more about the flight plan into this place. Is it a case of needing 4 wheel drive to get up to it? Was it simply due to rain,melting snow conditions that made it difficult ? Please follow up with the rice report as many including myself will be very interested especially with the $150 /ton figure.Do you have a phone number for the location? Diesel fuel is on the up yet again and it is getting so that everything counts more than ever these days. Thanks for the post. Mike

If you're heading east on rt 901, coming from I-81, their driveway will be about 3.5 miles on the left. There is a large sign with a mammoth on it. A 2wd pickup, and most cars would have no problem making it up the lane, unless it was excessively icy. The Prius has hyperactive traction control that cannot be disabled, so I needed to keep the hammer down to make it up the hill. The lane is about 1/3 mile long, and their cashier/office is in a prefab shed/garage at the top of the hill.

Here's a pic of the ash from burning the nut size in my DS1500. Seems to be predominantly red ash, with some white mixed in. No clinkers yet, but I'm still running a low-mid fire.

Are those rocks on the left, or just a couple chunks of partially burnt coal?

They were pieces of unburnt coal, I tossed 'em back in the stove. The DS lets a few pieces of coal slip past if you move the lever too far while shaking.

Mammoth and Keystoker Mfg are neighbors so that is why the relationship. I've had mixed messages on their coal, guess it depends on the vein they are working. Keystoker is a good product and good people as are Mammoth's owners. I would be using one of Keystoker's units but they didn't have a combo unit like Harman's SF250. If I ever go to rice I'd probably consider a Koker. For now, Superior has provided great coal for me the last five years and my late uncle for the last few decades.

I've had coal from Superior as well, and it was very good. Honestly, I think the coal I got at Superior worked better in my dutchwest, as I had to run that stove hot all the time. UAE clinkered badly in that stove, but the Superior burned beautifully. I wanted to try this Mammoth coal out, since the price is a little less. The owner said that they had just been a re-seller of coal until last year, and that they are now selling coal that they mine on site. I believe he said it's the Little Buck vein that they are pulling from right now.

Another thing they do, is they have a coal hod in the office with little slips of paper in it, with $125, $130, $140, and $150 written on them...... You get to pick a slip out of the coal hod and see if you're getting a discount, if you're buying a ton or more!

I received a review back on the rice coal, and it isn't as favorable as my review for the nut size.

Apparently their "rice" coal is sized too small, closer to barley size than rice. A buddy of mine tested it in his Harman super mag stoker, and he said there were some small pieces of unburned material, and that it didn't put out as much heat as expected. I am not personally familiar with stokers, so my suggestion for anyone wanting to try their coal, to go get a few buckets or bags worth.

I took two 5 gallon buckets, and they charged $3.50 each to fill them.

I wasn't a big fan of the Rice coal from Mammoth Materials as it seemed a little small and loaded with fines. You can see my full review here: Rice Coal Reviews for the Year

Me and my dad just got 3 ton each of nut coal from mammoth. Still burning wood but hoping this burns good. I ended last year burning UAE Harmony but seemed to clinker on me when I was burning really hot. It had Great heat output though.

Mammoth's nut coal was not mixed with pea. It seemed to be sized accurately.
