Coal Trip to NEPA

I'm looking to pick up my years supply and thinking of taking the trip to NEPA to get my own. I'm looking to pick up 6 tons. As bagged coal is up to around $350 per ton here, I'm thinking I can save some money and have a nice road trip in the process. Any suggestions on where to go?

What do you have for a truck/trailer? If I was going to try and get something special, it would be UAE...but that also depends on which direction you come from.

Hello there, first off what do you have to haul 6 ton in? There is another thread on here that is saying PA has a new law about gross weight, check it out. From RI your fuel costs may eat that savings up. Just things to think about.

I've got an f350 and a 7 ton Trailer, coming from Rhode Island. I figured it's 700 miles round trip, so fuel and a hotel is going to cost me about $350.

Yeah, once upon I time I thought the same thing but when you consider the time and cost involved with your trip I'm pretty sure you'll find that the cost will be the same for bagged coal whether you brought it in RI or in NEPA. I know that's counter to every economic principle there is but when I did the math, it was true. In my humble opinion the savings - if any - isn't worth the trip. Richard explained it once but since I like to re-invent the wheel I spent a lot of time making calls only to be disappointed. Indeed, the cost of a bag of coal in the NEPA, RI or Maine is virtually the same. I don't know why it is but it is.

If you can buy bulk coal, that’s another story all together. You can save big bucks on coal with a trip to NEPA for bulk coal. Check with Wood n Coal, he modifies a u haul trailer with plywood and picks up bulk coal every year.

On the other hand, buying any coal is a great reason to visit the great NEPA region of the country and everyone should do that at least once. Take care, Lisa

I know your logic and I also know it isn't necessarily about the cost of the product.....It is about the trip, AND the nice folks you will meet, great food, and the knowledge that you did something to control your own destiny.
It's like going to a Maple Sugar House to buy syrup....same as in the store, but it's the experience of just being there....picking your own blueberries, strawberries, corn...etc.

Also, for some of us it's a great time to say 'thank you' those men and women who work their butts off to provide us with such affordable comfort; and have done so for decades.

I've come th the realization I'm going to get bulk. Just need to figure out how to safely modify my trailer as it has no sides.

Hell plumber, that hotel/gas cost is a ton of coal--but, like Lisa said, nice trip & anyone that can--should--do it that is Nice trailer W'nC--what do you use for sides & how much can you put in it.--Ya gotta love the Dave's of the world.

Plumber I would build sides out of 2x4 and plywood and bolt to the floor put 3 or 4 eye bolts in the top 2x and across on the floor next to the other side eyebolts and use ratchet straps to hold the sides in place. Hope you can picture this.

Harmony in Mt.Carmel Pa. bear in mind that they have a sign posted something to the affect that - All Loads Must Be Tarped Before Leaving The Yard.So you want to consider adding a tarp and tie downs to your list of take alongs.We would like you to come and spend your hard earned in our State but would absolutely hate for you to leave it with the nice man driving the speedy car with lights on the roof.
