I called a place named Agri- Service has bagged Blaschak, only size they have left this season is rice.

I got 3600 lbs. at J.E. Rice in August. Just about same price as last time. 125 miles each way is a drag.

Julie did yo have luck with your coal this season? I am in Richmond as well. I usually hit up wood stoves unlimited for my bagged anthracite but for Bit I use Martin coal it's good stuff.

Hey Turbine , I happened to be in the area so I picked up a pallet of nut from J E Rice . Nice guy cool little hardware store . They are a little bit pricier than a place about 1.5 hours father south "woodstoves unlimited " usually I buy from them but I had a flat bed truck and I was just a few minutes away from J e rice and was heading back to Richmond so picked the load up . Seems like more places are stopping to sell coal... Very disappointing .

I live in Roanoke and unbelievably am having trouble finding a distributor of anthracite coal chunks. There is a place in Cambrian outside of Christiansburg that sells bagged rice and small nugget size anthracite coal but it's small size would fall thru the openings in the grates that are built in within my 1900s home fireplaces. Any advice of somewhere nearby that sells anthracite rocks (the size of one's fist or larger) would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I get pop-ups for a company called Dixiegas out of Lexington and Verona. Their webpage indicates they have coal but I don't know the brand or type. Check them out at Dixiegas.com. Lisa

bobc...i am thinking you don't want anthracite for burning in your fireplace grates, you want bituminous. can you take a pic of this grate set up in your fireplace for us to look at?

Geez... I completely missed the part of the coal baskets. There is a current post running about burning in coal baskets - check it out, Coal Fireplace Basket Suggestions/Comments. I wouldn't think you'd have a problem finding Bit coal in South Central Va. Lisa

Bob C, welcome to the forum. Those original victorian fireplaces were designed to burn Bituminous coal. I don't think you would have much, if any luck with anthracite. I didn't. Alot of good information in the current thread that lowfog01 mentioned. How about some pictures of those lovely fireplaces. Matt

Hmmmm...... Reading the posts I remember when I burned anthracite in a Loth stove it would pop off smaller pieces but it was soooooo clean....smoked very little...and was clean to handle. Bought some really crappy bagged bit coal here in Roanoke to burn in my fireplaces that were designed to burn coal....will try to post some photos tomorrow.....the coal burned extremely smokey....left clinkers.....and smelled horrendous ...... Which was leaning me to anthracite. I read the posts on the other pages and rather than have grates that have legs and sit in the firebox, the ones I have are 'L' shaped and attach to the walls on each side of the firebox

Hey Bob look up woodstoves unlimited . They have stove coal which is the size you want .
