Hand Fed Coal Stove: Vermont castings Vigilant II model 2310

Post by ScubaSteve » Sat. Oct. 02, 2010 8:23 pm

I'm a little frustrated... I've checked with 3 different dealers and they all want $320+ a ton p/u or $330+ a ton delivery. I don't expect to get coal as cheap as in NEPA but I personally think that these prices are steep. Does anyone have any info on coal in NJ that is priced fairly? When I see posts from people further away from me from the mines for $260 a ton delivered I feel like Im getting burned. help :(

With prices like that the dealers are going to price themselves right out of business! Pellets are being advertised for $265 a ton around here.
You might need to make a run to NEPA!

The most I can buy at a time is 3 tons due to storage issues, so buying 10 or 20 tons at a time unfortunately is out of the question.

Even for 3 ton you're looking at savings of $400+/- if you drive here and pick it up yourself. Sounds like it's worth a Saturday to me. ;)

Those prices are insane!!! According to Google, you only live about 150 miles from coal country. I'm paying $265 bagged and I live 750 miles from there. Like Richard said it may be time for a road trip!

I wish I had the vehicle to pick it up myself. The most I can muster is possibly a fullsize pickup. I would even rent a small dump truck if I could

Rent a U-Haul trailer and make the trip.

You can take a ride out to NEPA or up here to American Coal, even with the gas and trailer rental you'll still save.

Yes, U Haul also won't rent trailers to Ford Explorer drivers. What about the pick-up?

Well, its my brothers, I know he would let me borrow it. The question is, that It is a fullsize dodge 1500, so realistically how much coal could I legally haul in it? 1 ton? Is it worth the drive with gas/tolls to nepa for 1 ton??

You can haul 3/4 to 1 ton in the bed and about 1 1/2 in a rented trailer. 1 ton fills the 8 foot bed on my F-250 half way, the rental 5' X 8' utility trailer is listed at 1,890 lbs. max cargo weight. Based on my real life experience with them they are built to haul much more then that, but it's better to be on the safe side. ;)

A truck with heavier axles and suspension can haul more, I have carried 2 ton in my truck.

John, how much is on the 6x12 in the above pic?

In the making trip to uae harmony, there's a lot of discussion on using the uhaul trailers.

For what it's worth, the 6X12 U-Haul utility trailer has 2 4500 lbs. axles and hubs. The tires are rated 2040 lbs. ea. at 65 psi. The Axel and frame of that trailer is the same as their largest car carrier trailer. Me personally, I feel more then comfortable putting a 3.5 ton load on that trailer with the proper tow vehicle and care of driving
You will need 3' to 4' pieces of plywood on back front and sides to hold 3.5 or 4 tons the sides front back of trailer are to
low so you need some plywood to hold the coal in plus tarp & tie downs to cover the load
