I always thought that there had to be a hard frost before it could be called an Indian Summer. We always have the wooly ones but haven`t noticed any new type as of yet.

Folklore of the eastern United States and Canada holds that the relative amounts of brown and black on the skin of a woolly bear caterpillar (commonly abundant in the fall) are an indication of the severity of the coming winter. It is believed that if a woolly bear caterpillar's brown stripe is thick, the winter weather will be mild and if the brown stripes are narrow, the winter will be severe.

I've seen a few of them here that are almost all black.

About 2 for the hand-fed, none for the boiler.

 Nice one John! 8-)

I think (Forgot already!! :D ) I have 6.5 tons downstairs now .... at least I'm sure of 4.8 tons anyway ...

We have a billion of those white caterpillars in pic #3 there all over the place, but no wooly bears at all this year. Never seen the yellow ones in these parts. But man, those white ones are taking over - no joke! There were no less than 10 of them all over me, my tools, the boat & the driveway last night working on my buddy's boat trailer. Never seen so many. Never saw one as a kid - there weren't any.

I recall the gypsy moth caterpillars of '80 -'81 though ... as I'm sure most MA residents do. They stripped every single leaf off every single tree in the state! It was like winter in July!! Not a leaf to be found. My ol' man had a white '76 Torino back then ... and I remember the doors & rear quarters being totally brown from the billions of caterpillars run over in the street! Caterpillar guts! Was worse than the winter sand/salt. I also remember the white concrete foundation of the house being totally black with billions of them too. Was a total invasion. Haven't seen anything like it since.

Wooaaah WAAAY off topic here!
