Where to Buy Bituminous Coal in the Powder River Basin.

Hi Ben,

Thank You for doing all the looking around for coal to buy. I'm over in the southwest near Livingston MT. and have just started asking around. I was amazed at how nobody seems to know anything about how to go about getting a truckload of coal. I know a blacksmith who might know of a source and if it is good and reasonable I will post it here. The Decker coal you talked about sure sounds inviting, hope you can breakthrough on that source again. Do you have any idea why with all our coal mines here in MT that it is so hard to get? I mean to go to WY for poorer quality coal is kind of ridicules. I want to buy a coal stove but will hold off until this crazy can't get what we mine by the kilo-tons every day in MT is figured out. Thanks once again Ben, feels good to get that off my chest.

I was finally able to find some good Decker coal in Sheridan, WY from Schultz's.

Don't they mine some coal around Butte?? I'm not sure, but it seems like I've heard that once.

A little update on the coal crisis here...

In Sheridan, Mullinax and Schultz sell coal. Schultz, for sure, sells different sizes, including lump. Both get coal from Wolf Mountain which is the retail yard at Decker. Wolf Mountain has had a shortage of lump for awhile because they weren't getting any from Decker - at least until last week when we got them some phenomenal lumps... like you'd have to bring a pickup full of friends to help you lift one. Anyway, they are back to having lump and much better quality coal than we've been able to mine for them in awhile.

Also, I inquired at Wolf Mountain and have found that there are coal deliveries being made to Brodus and to Casper and several other places. If you want more info, PM me and I'll get it to you.

Decker (and Spring Creek for that matter) have higher BTU, lower sodium, lower ash than PRB coal.
